Dirty German 50 Miler - May 15, 2016 - Philadelphia, PA
Happy with my healed plantar fasciitis and pleased with my personal best at the Lake Wamaraug 50 miler, three weeks later I ran the Dirty German 50 mile ultra trail. You can also run a 25K or a 50K. I had a DNF in the 50 miler in 2013. This trail ultra in a beautiful setting in Penny Pack Park outside Philadelphia is a bit more challenging.
It was a beautiful blue sky and sunny but cold spring day. The loop is 16.6 miles of 1.5 miles of pavement and all trail with some elevation. Here we're approaching the end of first 16.6 mile loop.
We navigated over and under this fallen tree and two creeks three times. I made the 35 mile/ 8 hour cut-off.
On my last loop and approaching mile 42. I walked this last loop. My legs were tired and my feet were beaten. But I was cheered on by these beautiful deer to push on to the finish before the 12 hour 30 minute time limit.
I made it to the finish in 12:19:21. The swag for entering, finishing, and placing is great. I went home with a sweat shirt, a running hat, a bottle opener for a medal, and a German weatherhouse for placing third in my age group. Slow and steady finishes the race with a prize.
